The holidays have come and gone, and I am happy to say that I was successful in my decision to not purchase any new decorations this year. Sure, this is how most people live- they nicely tuck away all of their decor and store it to use again year after year. While I try to do that, most years are able to tempt me with new items and more spending money on things that I don't actually need.
When I plan something, I don't just want it to be a party or event... I want it to be an experience. Something to cherish and remember for years to come. This is one of the reasons I enjoyed my adventures with my Grandma so much. I would have so much fun planning the perfect activity that would keep her engaged, help us both learn some new things, and just have a ton of fun.
This year, I decided to do something special for her birthday and create an adventure that she would have LOVED. These are the necessities when planning...
1.) Guest List: I prefer to keep this intimate with only those who will genuinely appreciate the efforts and meaning that you put in. I also have different people for different events, depending on who may enjoy or need it more at that time.
2.) Theme: I LOVE a theme. It gets my brain motivated and inspired with creativity.
3.) Decorations: DIY decorations can be found for pretty much any theme. If you're not very crafty or just don't have the time to put in, there are always little things you can usually buy inexpensively or even just find around your house.
4.) Make it Personal: Everyone loves to feel special. Personalized glasses, name tags, photos, etc. will always be a fun way for guests to feel welcome.
5.) Bonding: Come up with an activity or game that creates conversation and bonding.
I tend to look for easy trivia games on theme and then some table topic questions that require bonding/laughing/sharing.
6.) Signature Cocktail: This is a fun one for me because now that I don't drink alcohol, I enjoy trying different flavors and most of all, making a drink look fun and festive.
Jello Shots are always a big win on the side too! Make sure you provide some kind of munchies.
7.) Music: Create a playlist to set the mood and add to the whole experience.
8.) Location: Sometimes I like to have a little field trip planned that adds a magic touch for extra special occasions.
This specific event was titled "Bingle Bell Ball" in honor of what would be my Grandma's 96th birthday. I knew that our first Christmas without her would be difficult and since her birthday is also in December, it was the perfect time for celebrations instead of sadness.
I had her in mind with every single thing that I did. She LOVED Bing Crosby (hence the name) so he was the main focus for me to work with. I found a stunning historic hotel here in San Diego, where Bing was a regular and it turns out they create a magical display for Christmas. We got dressed up, played some Bing Crosby games and had a champagne toast to Toots (her nickname) and those who are no longer with us. It was exactly the type of Birthday adventure that she would have loved. My beautiful angel, you are forever with me.
